A woman bishop in Sweden

1. Apr, 2019

On March 3, 2019, Karin Johannesson took the place of Bishop Ragnar Persenius, who has retired.

Pastor and theologian Karin Johannesson was elected Bishop of the Diocese of Uppsala on November 6, 2018, receiving 357 votes from those present. The other candidate fell slightly behind, obtaining 231 votes. 700 people took part in the election: half were pastors and deacons in the diocese’s congregations, and half represented the congregation members themselves from the congregations of the Diocese of Uppsala.

The consecration service was attended by representatives of various denominations, as well as Her Majesty Queen Silvia of Sweden.

At the beginning of the year, the editor of the website of the Latvian Association of Lutheran Women Theologians, Aļesja Lavrinoviča, met with Bishop-elect Karin Johannesson at the Faculty of Theology of Uppsala University and talked about God, the cliché of the Church of Sweden’s liberalism, Lutheran spirituality, and the ordination of women.
