The exhibition “In the Light of the Gospel: The Reformation in the Primary Sources of the 16th Century”

At the Academic Library of the University of Latvia, from 10 March to 21 April this year, a unique exhibition “In the Light of the Gospel: The Reformation in the Primary Sources of the 16th Century” is on view.

The unique collection of documents and manuscripts exhibited at the exhibition, found in the orb of the tower of St. Peter’s Church in Riga, at a height of 136 metres,  dates from the period between 1491 and 1578. Ciriacus Klint, a pewter smith and a pupil of the Riga man of letters Burchard Waldis, calligraphically wrote out the history of the Reformation of Livonia and Riga on a sheet of parchment, made an ornate pewter casket, and placed them in the tower’s sphere.  These historical testimonies were kept there until the middle of the 18th century. After 200 years, documents from the holdings of the UL Academic Library and the casket from the collection of the Museum of the History of Riga and Navigation will meet again for a brief moment at this exhibition.

The author of the exhibition “In the Light of the Gospel: The Reformation in the Primary Sources of the 16th Century from the Holdings of the Academic Library of the University of Latvia” is Dr. philol. Aija Taimiņa, head of the Manuscripts and Rare Books Department of the UL Academic Library.
