A Catholic priest who was excommunicated in 2012 for openly advocating for women’s ordination in the Catholic Church sends an open letter to Pope Francis during his visit to the USA and writes:
“We Catholics are taught that men and women are created equal: “There is neither male nor female. In Christ you are one.” (Gal 3:28). Pope Francis, why can women not be priests? [..]
Pope Francis, who are we to say that our calling from God is authentic, but God’s calling of women is not (authentic)? Is our almighty God, who created the Universe, not capable of allowing a woman to be a priest?
Let us face the truth. The problem the male hierarchy has with ordaining women is not God’s problem; it is merely the culture of the male clergy, who regard women as something lesser than men. The problem is with men who view women as a threat to their power and privileges.
Sexism, like racism, is a sin. And no matter how hard we try to make God our partner in discrimination against others because of their sex, race, or sexual orientation, that is not the way of the loving God who created each person with equal worth and dignity.
Silence is an accomplice to injustice. The exclusion of women from the office of priesthood is a grave injustice against women, against the Catholic Church, and against our God, who calls both men and women to be priests.
Pope Francis, please break your silence and lift the ban on women’s ordination.
In solidarity,
Roy Bourgeois”
