A woman has been elected moderator of the highest governing body of the World Council of Churches.
Significantly, Dr Agnes Abuom (of the Anglican Church in Kenya) is the first woman, and moreover a woman of African origin, to be elected to such a high office in 65 years!
The election took place on 8 November this year at the meeting of the 10th Assembly of the Council, which was held from 30 October to 8 November in the city of Busan, Republic of Korea.
The World Council of Churches is the largest ecumenical movement in the world, uniting 349 national, regional and worldwide churches and church associations that represent approximately 590 million people in 150 countries, including 520,000 local congregations, 493,000 ministers and priests.
The Council’s bodies also include representatives of the Orthodox Church and representatives nominated by the Roman Catholics. It should be added that the Roman Catholic Church participates in the Council with observer status.
