In contrast — indeed in sharp contrast — to the Jewish tradition, Jesus considered women equal to men. Did Paul try to amend Jesus’ teaching? Was he a pragmatist who acknowledged it in theory but in practice assigned women a second-rate role? Did women hold all the offices of the Church in the early Christian congregation?
