A Woman Elected as Presiding Bishop in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA – Evangelical Lutheran Church in America)

On August 14, 2013, Elizabeth A. Eaton, ELCA bishop of the Northeastern Ohio Synod, was elected as the presiding bishop, or archbishop, of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America  (ELCA).

Elizabeth A. Eaton was born in Cleveland, Ohio.

In 1981 she was ordained as a pastor of All Saints Lutheran Church for 6 years in Worthington, Ohio.

From 1990 to 1991, Elizabeth served as an interim pastor at Good Hope Lutheran Church in Youngstown, Ohio.

In 1991, Elizabeth began her pastoral ministry at Messiah Lutheran Church in Ashtabula, Ohio. She served in this congregation right up until her election to the office of bishop in 2006.

Bishop Eaton is married; her husband serves as a pastor of an Episcopal congregation and as a management consultant. The Eaton couple has two daughters, Rebecca and Susanna.

The ELCA  is one of the largest Christian denominations in the United States and the Caribbean region, with more than 4 million members in nearly  10,000 congregations. The ELCA’s theological roots are in the works of the German reformer Martin Luther.
