In the review of the commission’s study, carried out by Krūmiņa-Koņkova, who selected specific cases that reflect the comprehensive control exercised by the commissioner of the USSR Council for the Affairs of Religious Cults in the Latvian SSR over the Latvian Roman Catholic Church and the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Latvia, a brief insight is given into the methods by which the activities of the Churches were restricted, and by which pastors and priests loyal to the Church were discredited and declared enemies of the Soviet authorities. In the published review, drawing on the materials available in collections 1448, 1419 and 270 of the State Archives of Latvia (LVA) of the Latvian National Archives – mostly unpublished documents – a closer look is taken at a few examples illustrating the activities of the religious affairs commissioner in the period from 1944 to 1954.
