27. Jun, 2018

The publishing house “Klints” has released a wonderful book, “The Female Ancestors of Christ” (The famale Ancestors of Christ), whose author is the professor of psychiatry and religious studies in the USA, Ann Belford Ulanov. The launch celebration of the book will take place on 30 June at 11:00 on the premises of the Faculty of Theology of the University of Latvia, in auditorium 161, Raiņa bulvāris 19, Riga.

Ann Belford Ulanov's psychological and theological work THE FEMALE ANCESTORS OF CHRIST examines a very unusual fact – four women are included in the patriarchal genealogy of Jesus Christ in the Gospel of Matthew: Tamar, Rahab, Ruth and Bathsheba. Why are they placed in the line of Jesus' ancestors, which is made up only of men? Why have precisely these women been chosen, and why only four? Why have we heard so little about them in Christian tradition and teaching? How can their presence in the tree of life that leads to Jesus be explained?

The author analyzes these ancestresses of Christ from a special perspective, drawing on insights from textual interpretation, from theology, and from C. G. Jung's depth psychology, in order thereby to reveal in the Holy Scriptures the symbolic significance of the feminine and how it influences our understanding of Christ.

About the author: Ann Belford Ulanov is a professor of psychiatry and religious studies at Union Theological Seminary in New York. She has especially studied particular aspects of human life such as prayer, the spiritual life, dreams, identity and the feminine, and has also worked as a therapist in Jungian analytical psychology.

The book was published with the financial support of the Latvian Lutheran Women Theologians, the Rītdienas Fund of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Latvia Abroad, Rev. Juris Cālītis and the women theologians of the Church of Sweden (Kvinnor i Svenska Kyrkan).
