The statistics are harsh – one in three women suffers from domestic violence, most often from aggression caused by a partner/husband. This is one of the highest rates in the European Union. Every year activists gather outside the Saeima building to address politicians and try to improve the situation of women in Latvian society. How have things gone so far, and what still needs to change?
The panel discussion will bring together specialists from various fields, who will try to explain the current situation in Latvia from their own perspective.
Topics:
– what the existing situation is, how it can change, or how it will change;
– if something goes wrong, where women can turn for help and what the process is to obtain this help;
– what role the Istanbul Convention would play if it were adopted into our legislation;
– the other side, that is, the psychological side of the victim and the reasons why a situation can escalate as far as death;
– the normalization of violence;
– the Saeima’s ability to interfere with a woman’s ability to decide about her own body.
