Aļesja Lavrinoviča will take part in a top international-level conference of Bible scholars

26. Jun, 2014

From 6 to 10 July this year, University of Latvia Faculty of Theology graduate and current University of Leuven student Aļesja Lavrinoviča will take part in a top international-level conference of Bible scholars in Vienna, Austria – the international meeting of the Society of Biblical Literature. At the international conference, Aļesja will present in the working group of textual criticism specialists with her study on the examination of verses 34 and 35 of chapter 14 of Paul’s First Epistle to the Corinthians, visually demonstrating the evidence of ancient manuscripts that the placement of verse 33 in the ancient Greek and Latin manuscripts — which in the majority of manuscripts is located before the pericope “about women” and in other manuscripts is located before verse 36 (pushing the verses silencing women to the end of the chapter) — proves the dubious nature of verses 34 and 35, which the ancient copyists themselves were also aware of, as they left verse 33 together with the preceding paragraph in all the manuscripts and in some manuscripts “cut off” the ending of verse 33 in order to insert the doctrine of silencing women, with which the Apostle Paul had nothing to do, and which over the centuries unfortunately became a Pauline stigma.

The Society of Biblical Literature (SBL) is the oldest and largest international academic organisation with members in the field of biblical studies. The Society of Biblical Literature was founded in 1880 and currently brings together more than 8,500 international members, including teaching staff, students, spiritual leaders and individuals at various stages of life, united by a common interest in the study of the Bible.
