As 2014 began, the President of Latvia A. Bērziņš confirmed as prime minister the previous Minister of Agriculture, physicist, mathematician and doctor of economics Laimdota Straujuma.
L. Straujuma is the first woman since the restoration of the independence of the Republic of Latvia to be entrusted with forming a government. A. Bērziņš, in entrusting L. Straujuma with forming the Cabinet of Ministers, has appointed her as the ‘head’ of the new government.
The British newspaper “Independent”, which also published the news about Latvia’s first woman prime minister, offers an introduction to 12 influential women of the world, among them several presidents (in Argentina and Brazil), the Chancellor of Germany and several heads of government: from Denmark all the way to South Korea and China.
