A woman pastor, Pat Storey, was elected on September 20 of this year as the first bishop of the Anglican Church of Ireland and Great Britain in two Irish districts: Meath and Kildare.
Pat Storey is married to the pastor Earl Storey and is the mother of two adult children. Pat Storey studied French and English, later theology, and in 1997 was ordained as a deacon, and already in 1998 as a pastor in the Anglican church. Since 2004 she has served as a pastor in St. Augustine’s parish in the Derry district of Northern Ireland.
The Archbishop of Dublin, M. Jackson, said that the election of a woman as bishop has brought joy to many in the Church of Ireland and the Anglican Communion.
The Anglican churches in Scotland and Wales are also entitled to elect women to the rank of bishop, yet so far have not done so. The Church of England plans to discuss authorization to ordain women as bishops in 2015, although the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, announced that he wishes to consecrate a woman bishop as soon as possible.
