The Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Congregation in Colorado is looking for a full-time pastor to serve God in our church and its surroundings, for the maintenance and building up of spiritual life.
Situation description
The Colorado Latvian congregation is located in the Denver area. Our mission is to serve the American Latvian community, as well as other people, so that together we may grow closer to God. The brothers and sisters of our congregation come both from the Denver area and from the wider Colorado region. Most of the congregation are Latvians or people of other nationalities who are connected with Latvians but do not speak Latvian. Our Sunday worship services are held in two languages – part of the liturgy and the hymns are in Latvian, but the sermon and the readings are always in English. The worship services are traditionally followed by fellowship with tea, coffee and snacks. Our church is located in the same building as the Colorado Latvian Cultural Center.
Special requirement
The pastor must have a command of both Latvian and English.
Summary of the job offer
The pastor’s main duty is to lead the congregation through prayers, the rites of worship and the teaching of the Bible. Together with the congregation’s board, of which he / she is also a member, the pastor sees to the growth in the number of worship attendees and the promotion of spiritual development.
Job duties
- Lead each Sunday and feast-day worship service, including – Christmas Eve and Good Friday services.
- Lead Bible studies.
- Provide office hours at the church and Christian counselling.
- Visit elderly or sick people, both at home and in hospitals.
- Baptize, confirm (also lead confirmation classes), marry and conduct funerals.
- Also serve the community in the church’s surroundings.
- Take part in the church’s administrative work and organize church events.
- Choose hymns for the worship services.
Requirements for the candidate
An ordained pastor with at least two years of work experience and a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent in theology.
Good knowledge of Latvian and English; computer skills and music skills will be considered an advantage.
An approachable and friendly character … a sense of humour will also come in handy.
Remuneration
The salary, housing, insurance and the other components of remuneration will depend on the particular candidate’s qualifications.
