Pastor Ieva Puriņa installed as Dean of the LELCA in Latvia on September 27.
Pastor Vaira Bitēna is one of the founders of the Association of Lutheran Women Theologians in Latvia.
On August 1st 2020 Pastor Ieva Puriņa was elected by the Synod of the LELCA in Riga to become the first Dean of the Latvian Deanery of the LELCA.
Looking back at the past 25 years, it is obvious that the path has been difficult and thorny. Several women were hurt by the sudden theological shift of LECL and the non-ordination policy. The deepest scars were left by the attitude of the leadership and male colleagues. Many women had to leave Latvia and serve in other countries in order to follow their vocations.
Yes, we have a number of female bishops, but the process involved in the consecration of male bishops who do not accept female priesthood, still remains. Women are officially allowed to be seen as,” not quite the ticket”.

Prof. Dr. Dace Balode has been re-elected the Dean of the Faculty of Theology of the University of Latvia. She is the first female Dean of the Faculty of Theology. Since 2018 Dace Balode is also a Lutheran pastor of the Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Church Abroad.
