International Women’s Day 2017

8. Mar, 2017

“Let’s make Women’s Day a success”. .             The theme of this year’s International Women’s Day is “Be Bold for Change” – a call for people to help forge a better working world – a more gender-inclusive world. It is time to look back at how far we have come and how far we still have to go before women all over the world truly achieve gender justice.             On this day we recognize and celebrate the achievements of women in the social, economic, cultural and political spheres all over the world, but we also remember those who suffer from gender inequality.             In 2017 we give special thought to those women who have survived gender-based violence, which is increasingly being used as a weapon to destroy communities in violent conflicts. You can read about one such case in the story about the South Sudanese refugee crisis in Uganda.             At the same time, we acknowledge and salute those women who have crossed traditional boundaries and found their voice, defending the rights of others. On the LWF website you can read the story of Basanti Chaudhary, who stands up against forced labour, and about the freedom of thousands of men and women in Nepal.             The LWF supports women who have survived gender-based violence in South Sudan. Every day hundreds of refugees still arrive in northern Uganda; it is an enormous challenge – to protect the wounded and support those who have survived violence. Source:  https://www.lutheranworld.org
